Grana

Stacks of structures called thylakoids found within chloroplasts in plant cells. These thylakoids are membrane-bound compartments where the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis occur, and their stacking into grana increases the surface area, thereby maximizing the efficiency of photosynthesis. Grana are essential for plants and other photosynthetic organisms to efficiently convert light energy into chemical energy.
